Sighnaghi is Georgia's highest town, perched at 790 metres above sea level on the edge of the Alazani Valley, earning it the nickname 'City of Lovers'.
The town's defensive walls, originally built in the 1760s by Georgian King Erekle II, stretch for nearly 4.6 kilometres and remain largely intact today.
Sighnaghi is the gateway to the Kakheti wine region, Georgia's largest and most celebrated wine-producing area, with over 70 wineries nearby.
The town was almost entirely depopulated by the 1980s due to Soviet-era neglect, but has undergone a dramatic revival since the 2000s as a cultural and tourism destination.
Every spring, Sighnaghi hosts the Baivari festival celebrating local wine, food and traditional Georgian culture with three days of celebrations.
The town's narrow cobblestone streets and pastel-coloured houses overlook the Alazani Valley and Mount Caucasus, making it one of Georgia's most photographed towns.
