Boyana Church's medieval frescoes are so well-preserved that they're considered a masterpiece of 13th-century Eastern Orthodox art and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The church was built in three phases: the eastern chapel in the 10th century, the western nave in the 19th century, and the narthex added later, creating a striking architectural timeline.

Boyana sits on the slopes of Vitosha Mountain, Bulgaria's most visited mountain, just 10 km south of Sofia city centre.

The frescoes inside Boyana Church depict biblical scenes with astonishing realism and detail, including one of the earliest known portraits of Bulgarian royalty—Tsar Constantine Tikh and his family.

The village of Boyana has been inhabited since Thracian times and was a favourite retreat of Bulgarian medieval nobility.
