Things to Do in Koh Samui

Koh Samui is Thailand's second-largest island and was virtually uninhabited until the 1970s, when the first coconut plantations and small fishing villages were established.

The Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) standing 12 metres tall on the northern coast has been Koh Samui's most iconic landmark since its completion in 1972 and is visible from nearly everywhere on the island.

Koh Samui's name likely derives from the Sanskrit word 'Su Maui', meaning 'haven of safety', though locals and historians debate its true etymology.

The island experiences two monsoon seasons—southwest (May–October) and northeast (November–February)—making December to February peak season and September the quietest, often wettest month.

Koh Samui has no train or airport directly on the island; most visitors arrive via Samui International Airport (opened 1989) or ferry from the mainland, then navigate by songthaews (shared taxis) or motorbike.
