Things to Do in Galle

Galle Fort, built by the Portuguese in 1588 and expanded by the Dutch, is one of the best-preserved colonial fortifications in Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami destroyed much of Sri Lanka's coast but Galle Fort's thick medieval walls protected the town inside, making it a natural breakwater.

Galle is home to the International Cricket Council's official cricket museum, housed in the historic Old Prison building within the fort.

The fort's ramparts stretch nearly 900 metres (3,000 feet) and offer 360-degree views of the Indian Ocean and the surrounding town.

Fresh tropical fruit, especially king coconuts and mangoes, are cheaper and fresher in Galle's markets than in Colombo due to the town's proximity to agricultural areas.

Galle's nickname 'the fortress city' refers to its entire economy historically being dependent on maritime trade and defense of the harbour.
