Madaba is home to the 6th-century Madaba Map, the oldest known cartographic representation of the Holy Land, discovered beneath a church floor in 1896.

The city sits on the King's Highway, one of the ancient trade routes that connected Arabia to the Mediterranean, making it a crossroads of civilisations for thousands of years.

Madaba's mosaic-making tradition dates back over 1,500 years, and you can still watch artisans create intricate Byzantine-style mosaics in workshops throughout the old town.

The town lies at approximately 760 metres (2,500 feet) elevation on the eastern plateau of the Dead Sea rift, offering cooler temperatures than the Jordan Valley below.

Madaba was largely Christian for centuries and remains home to several Eastern Orthodox churches, reflecting its deep connection to early Christian history in the Levant.
