Things to Do in Sumida City

Sumida City is home to the Tokyo Skytree, the world's second-tallest structure at 634 metres, which opened in 2012 and has become one of Japan's most visited tourist attractions.

The Sumida River, which runs through the city, hosts one of Tokyo's most famous hanami (cherry blossom) viewing spots along the Asakusa embankment each spring.

Sumida City was formed in 2003 through the merger of Sumida Ward's predecessor districts and is located in Tokyo's eastern Shitamachi (old downtown) area, historically a centre for traditional crafts and entertainment.

The city is the birthplace of traditional Japanese sweets and snacks; Nakamise-dori shopping street in Asakusa, which borders Sumida, has operated continuously for over 1,300 years.

Sumida City sits adjacent to Asakusa, home to Sensoji Temple, Tokyo's oldest temple founded in 645 AD, making the area one of Japan's most spiritually significant districts.
