Things to Do in Ubud

Ubud is home to the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, a 27-hectare temple complex where over 700 Balinese long-tailed macaques roam freely among ancient stone temples.

The town sits 300 metres above sea level in Bali's central highlands, making it noticeably cooler and greener than coastal areas like Seminyak.

Ubud's traditional art market has operated continuously for decades and remains the epicentre of Balinese painting, sculpture, woodcarving, and textile production.

The Tegallalang Rice Terraces, just north of Ubud's town centre, are featured in countless travel photos and represent centuries-old Balinese agricultural engineering (the UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih terraces are larger, but Tegallalang is more accessible).

Ubud was largely spared from mass tourism until the 1970s, when it began attracting artists and spiritual seekers; it now welcomes around 2–3 million visitors annually.

The town is the cultural heart of Bali, with more galleries, performance venues, and traditional craft workshops per capita than anywhere else on the island.
