Things to Do in Narok

Narok is the gateway to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, one of Africa's most famous wildlife destinations and home to the annual Great Migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebras.

The town's name comes from the Maasai word 'Naro', meaning 'the place of the winds', reflecting its location on the edge of the Great Rift Valley.

Narok County is predominantly inhabited by the Maasai people, who maintain their traditional pastoralist culture and distinctive red shuka cloth despite modern development.

The Maasai Mara ecosystem straddles the Kenya-Tanzania border and is continuous with Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, creating one of the world's largest protected wildlife areas.

Narok town sits at approximately 1,900 metres elevation on the edge of the Rift Valley escarpment, giving it a cooler climate than lower-altitude Kenyan towns.
