Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in the Great Rift Valley, one of only two major freshwater lakes in Kenya (the other being Lake Turkana).
The lake is home to over 400 bird species, making it a premier destination for birdwatching in East Africa.
Naivasha's name comes from the Maasai word 'Nai'posha', meaning 'the place of the sharp winds', referring to the strong gusts that sweep across the water.
The region supplies over 90% of Kenya's cut flowers for export, with vast commercial flower farms surrounding the town.
Lake Naivasha is approximately 40 km long and has no surface outlet—water loss occurs entirely through evaporation and underground seepage.
The lake supports a thriving population of hippos, with estimates of around 4,000 individuals, plus giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species on surrounding plains.
