Description

Join us as we head west on a full day magical mystical tour to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and surroundings.

Countless lunar landscapes and volcanic vistas lie in store for us as we drive west out of Reykjavik and head towards the magnificent Snæfellsjökull glacier.

The glacier sits atop the active stratovolcano of the same name that took centre stage in the Jules Verne sci-fi novel, ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’. You might even have spotted the ice cap glittering from across the bay in Reykjavik. The volcano is thought to house mystical powers and is considered by many to be one of the seven main energy centres of the earth, so don’t be surprised if you experience an unexplained spiritual energy flow whilst in its presence.

This is an area is of exceptional geological beauty – craters, lava fields (some more recent than others) idyllic, hidden coves and bizarre rock formations all lie in wait to be explored and discovered.

First, and if the conditions of the terrain allow us, we visit Gerðuberg cliffs, where we can admire a wall of basalt columns, so characteristic in Iceland. Some of them reach up to 14 meters high.

Two farms will be our next destinations: Ytri Tunga and Lýsuhóll. At the sandy beach of Ytri-Tunga farm, there is a seal colony that can be seen all throughout the year (especially during the summer months). In the second, we will enjoy a tasty homemade meal before visiting the stables to meet the emblematic Icelandic horse.

Our next discovery will be the black church of Buðir, declared a national monument. In medieval times, this hamlet was one of the major ports in Iceland.

The dramatic coast of Arnarstapi and Hellnar is dotted with spectacular cliffs and rock formations that are breathtaking.

We will also visit the black sand beach of Djúpalónssandur where we can see the remains of a shipwreck that took place in 1948. It is really interesting to know the story behind the four big stones at the entrance of the beach, with different sizes. They were used to measure the strength of sailors in the days of the fishing stations and their salary was determined accordingly.

Nor will we leave Saxhóll's crater behind. After climbing stairs for about 5 minutes we will ascend to about 100 meters high. Once at the top it is possible to walk along the edge and look into a former volcano. The endless views of the surrounding areas are stunning.

Our next stop will be in Kirkjufell, possibly the most picturesque and most photographed mountain in the country. Surrounded by streams and small waterfalls, it was chosen to be one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones, featuring as the "Arrowhead mountain".

Finally, we will be surprised by the beautiful Leynifoss (also known as "the Sheep Waterfall"). From there we will enjoy wonderful views of the Selvallavatn lake and the immense lava field on the other side of it.

A fabulous tour that really hits the spot when it comes to observing volcanic phenomena, discovering Iceland’s dramatic coast line and experiencing a more spiritual and mystical side of Iceland. Local legends and folk stories abound and are an essential element of this multifaceted tour.
