RELICS FROM THE BIRTH OF JESUS
This tour begins with one of the 4 Major Basilicas of Rome - Santa Maria Maggiore (St Mary Major) - which it's the awe-inspiring golden interior, and its important relics. Your expert guide will explain the significance and symbolism of the mosaics and architecture before then taking you to see the crib in which the baby Jesus was laying. You will also see one of the famous icons painted by St Luke which has always been a focal point of devotion for Romans and pontiffs alike.
PILLAR OF CHRIST'S SCOURGING
From there, you will journey on to another Basilica which holds important artistic works together with the very Pillar that Jesus was scourged on in Jerusalem before his Crucifixion. It was brought to Rome in 1222 as a gift from the King of Jerusalem in reward for the Fourth Crusades and has been here ever since. It is a poignant moment for any Christian meditating on the Passion of Christ.
MOST FAMOUS ICON IN THE WORLD
Journey on, you will then visit the original of perhaps the most famous and well-recognised icon in the world - the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (or Our Lady of the Passion) housed in the gorgeous gothic church of the Redemptorist order. Your guide will explain the fascinating story of its miraculous history and also explain the symbolism contained in the artwork.
CATHEDRAL OF ROME & RELICS OF STS PETER & PAUL
You will then walk along an ancient route that countless pilgrims before you have trodden before arriving at the Cathedral of Rome - the Arch-Basilica of St John Lateran - one of the 4 Major Basilicas of Rome but also the only Arch-Basilica in the world, and the highest-ranking church of the world. Your guide will explain the origins of the Cathedral and explain the story of her golden mosaics. Your guide will also point out where the relics of Sts Peter & Paul that are contained therein are held.
HOLY STEPS OF CHRIST'S JUDGMENT
Across the road, you will also visit the Holy Steps where Pontius Pilate judged Jesus in Jerusalem. They were brought to Rome in the early 4th Century and have been a traditional place of pilgrimage for Christians ever since.
RELICS OF THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS BROUGHT FROM JERUSALEM
Finally, you will climax your tour at the final Basilica that contains relics of the actual Crucifixion of Jesus including parts of the Crown of Thorns, a Nail from the Crucifixion, parts of the Cross of Jesus, the walnut board that hung above Jesus' head on the cross, and more. This is perhaps the most important and holiest place in all of Christendom and of course the world and certainly not to be missed.
