Kastraki village is our starting hiking point and after a while in a stunning surrounding , we are in the natural path on the foot of the famous cliffs.
Our walk beneath the ruined monastery of Pantocrator on the north side of the rock Ntoupiani is a unique opportunity for photos.
We will walk entering the forest and reach the Monastery of the “Ipapanti” (is abandoned and recently restored) , don't miss the statue of agonist of the Greek revolution Papathymios Vlahavas.
Carrying on towards the top of the cliffs we walk the trail until we reach the impressive monasteries “Great Meteoro” and “Varlaam” , we will spend some time visiting the unique constructions .
Next we walk downhill close to Kastraki where we will enjoy a local traditional delicacies lunch, after that we will be passing next to the cave of St. George
Mandila, where every year climbers ascend to hang their scarves.
We then visit the byzantine Paint studio at Kastraki and have an interesting chat from a local artist regarding the history and the techniques of Byzantine art (hagiography) that adorn the walls of the monasteries.
Starting from the village square we will make our way to the path at the foot of the cliffs from where you will encounter the ruined monastery of Pantocrator from the northern side Ntoupiani rock. After this we will head into the thriving forest and see the restored but abandoned Monastary of the “Ipapanti” as well as the statue Papathymios Vlahavas.
The first part of our hike ends at the top of the cliff and we will spend approximately 1 hour visiting these impressive monasteries.
After visiting the monasteries, we will head downhill (passing also by the cave of St. George Mandila) and pick a spot near Kastraki village to enjoy our picnic lunch which will include some traditional delights and refreshments.
Finally, we will learn a little bit about byzantine art, it's history and the techniques used (hagiography) from a local icon artist giving you a new appreciation of the art you saw decorating the monastery walls!
