The cathedral's octagonal dome was erected between 1418 and 1434, it based on a design by Filippo Brunelleschi. At that time people thought it would be hard to finish that project, so in 1418 Brunelleschi started a competition to convince others that his project would be valid. The project was accepted only in 1420. Now it is still here, it is a masterpiece capable of withstanding lightning, earthquakes, and the passage of time. It continues to enchant all those who observe it. The dome has a diameter of 45.5 meters.
